Dr. Sam Hawthorne series by Edward D Hoch

這世界上， 只有一個作家，從1974年起， 直到2008他去世那年， 用同一個角色， 寫了七十二篇不可能犯罪短篇。
簡單的說， 他這系列的男主角， Dr. Sam Hawthorne， 每一篇都是不可能犯罪。
這種創舉， 可能是空前， 也可能是絶後的。
相信每個人都知道這位作家是誰了？ 是的， 就愛德華霍克 ( Edward D Hoch).

這七十二篇故事， 分別收錄在五本書裡：

2. More Things Impossible - Jul 2006
3. Nothing is Impossible - Apr 2014
4. All But Impossible - Jul 2017
5. Challenge the Impossible - 2018



出版社是 Crippen & Landru.
中文版則是中國的吉林出版社所出版， 但數量則變成六本。

這篇文章沒有打算去介紹這個系列， 只是想寫下一些有意思的梗：

• Sam Hawthorne 的名字縮寫為 S.H, 是愛德華霍克向一位名偵探致敬。 你認為是誰呢？ 
• Sam Hawthorne所居住的小鎮名為 Northmont , 隔壁城鎮名為 Shin Corners! Shin Corners其實是 Ellery Queen 的著作，  The Glass Village裡的場景。 
• 在每一個故事開始前， 山姆醫生已經是八十多歲了。 他總是向他眼前的訪客勸酒， 然後才開始娓娓道來他的故事。
  這神秘訪客的身份， 一直到“The Problem of Suicide Cottage”  （2007）才被掲露出來。
• 其中一個故事， The Problem of the Cell 16， 當然是向 Jacque Futrelle 的 The Problem of Cell 13 致敬。 
• 在 The Problem of Hunting Lodge, 山姆醫生的父母登場。
• 在 The Problem of Leather Man, 其中一個角色的名字為 Douglas Greene. (也就卡的傳記的作者。）
• The Problem of Haunted Tee ， 霍克筆下的另一名偵探， Ben Snow， 在這集中客串。 
• 在 The Problem of Ginger Houseboat 裡， 山姆醫生談戀愛了。 
• 在 The Problem of Bailey's Buzzard,  山姆醫生結婚。
• 每個故事都是使用第一人稱， 但在 The Problem of Octagon Room 裡則罕有的用上第三人稱。 

我把七十二個故事的標題、收集在那一本裡、 不可能犯罪的類別和短介全放進一個表裡， 就是下面這個圖表。

註： “猶大之窗”就是指只有當事人和死者在案發現場。

The Problem of Suicide Cottage	Challenge the Impossible	自杀小屋	密室謀殺	山姆醫生和他的老婆來到一間渡假屋， 但卻告知這是一間“自殺小屋”， 之前已經有兩人在此自殺。 當山姆醫生夫婦晚餐回來後， 卻發覺第三個自殺的死者在自己明明出門時就已經把所有門鎖好的屋子裡。
The Problem of the Summer Snowman	Challenge the Impossible	夏季雪人	密室謀殺	一男人死在一間反鎖的屋子裡。 在這炎熱的夏天裡， 一小女孩卻說她見到一雪人進去了屋子， 之後警方更發現地上濕了一片， 是溶掉了的雪人嗎？
The Problem of the Secret Patient	Challenge the Impossible	秘密病人	不可能毒殺	一名被隱藏身份的病人送進了山姆醫生所屬的醫院， 全程有FBI保護著， 但卻還是在不可能的情况下被人毒殺。
